Important Highway Notices
Do not remove any parts of the Highway 115 tunnel aside from the walls to access it. Objects that may not be removed include (but are not limited to) carpets, slabs, ice blocks, and buttons. You can decorate outside empty areas (labelled “Empty except signs or banners” in this diagram) with unobtrusive decorations (such as signs and banners) to make your connection more obvious. These modifications are at the Connection Consortium’s discretion and may be removed at any time.
No stores within the 100 ring road area. For season 9, as part of the community shopping district, a measure was passed to prohibit any roadside shops within the 100 ring road area. Instead, business should request a plot within the Overworld shopping district. Roadside stores are only allowed beyond the 100 ring road (more than 100 blocks in the X and/or Y direction).
Nether Hub
The Nether Hub is the origin point of the Nether and where all the cardinal highways meet. The main/top floor of this structure is dedicated to highway transport and is thus at the highway height level of 115. There will also be floors below, up to 50 blocks down. The reserved area for the Nether Hub is square with a radius of 37 blocks including the center, origin point for a total diameter of 75 blocks. This will facilitate the inclusion of better wayfinding and community additions within the hub. More details to come soon.
Tunnel Standards
For public Highway 115 construction, see the guide on tunnel standards here. For your private access tunnels, view Connecting Your Portal.
Cardinal (Main) Highways
The cardinal or main highways are the four paths that originate from (0, 0) and extend out along the cardinal directions (North, East, South, West). The center block of the highway (the ice block) should be along a 0 axis. These are the primary arteries of the network and thus are built to the 5 wide tunnel standard with packed ice out to 250 blocks (250 ring road) and then with blue ice out to 500 blocks (500 ring road). Make sure to pay attention to the carpet color guide in the tunnel design document. The cardinal highways are then to be extended further, out to 1000 blocks in each direction with the 3 wide tunnel standard using blue ice.
Ring (Auxiliary) Roads
The ring or auxiliary roads are the paths created at regular intervals to form a grid like network. They are named for the axis they run along. For example, the 250 east ring road is the path with its center block (the ice block) on the 250 axis (X = 250). These roads originate from the main highway at the stated distance and continue until they reach the next ring road (100 meets 250, 250 meets 500, 500 meets 1000) aside from the 1000 ring roads which are the limits of the network and thus do not have these extensions.
The 100 ring road is one of the most important paths. Therefore, it should built to the 5 wide tunnel standard with packed ice. Be sure to check the carpet color guide in tunnel standards as it is somewhat complex for the 100 ring road. The core sections (not the extensions) of the 250 ring road will also be built to the 5 wide tunnel standard but with blue ice. It will also follow the carpet color system.
The 250 extensions to 500, 500, and 1000 ring roads are less important and thus are built to a 3 wide tunnel standard with blue ice. New for this season, the glass panes used will also be color coded based on the guide.
